More than a garden, located in the heart of Colonia Roma, it is a “laboratory of social resilience” that offers chilangos the opportunity to eat, walk, learn and coexist with vegetation in the midst of the hustle and bustle of Mexico City.

For six years, this oasis in the Cuauhtémoc Municipality has been committed to a future in which the regeneration and sustainability of our city is at the forefront. Founded by Francisco Ayala and the organization La Cuadra, Huerto Roma is many things at once; it is a garden, an orchard, a school to learn to coexist with nature and the perfect venue if you want to organize a sustainable event.

A little history of the Roma Garden

Before becoming an unprecedented collective project, this space belonged to the Multifamiliar Juárez complex built in the 1950s . However, after the earthquake of 1985, at least ten buildings of the unit collapsed. Thus, after the tragedy, the property was abandoned for more than 25 years.

Fortunately, in 2012, groups, activists and volunteers came together to clean up the land and form an initiative that would link nature, gastronomy and culture in an astonishing way .

This is how Huerto Roma was formed, a benchmark of environmentalism that shows us every day the advantages of community and sustainable work. The wonders that happen when we come together and work for the same cause, a better future.

The mission of Orchard of Rome

One of its main objectives is to create a new lung for Mexico City. According to its founder, “when we work the land and begin to heal it, the land works for us.”

Inside the Roma Verde Garden there are edible flowers and vegetation of all colors, organic vegetables and fruits and many trees that, although they are very small now, tomorrow will become great caretakers of the capital of Mexico.

Let's learn to be a community

With the help of experts, farmers in the garden are also taught to use all parts of the ingredients they harvest , in order to avoid wasting food. Because if each person is able to produce their own food, pollution is dramatically reduced.

And although this garden supports and generates all kinds of projects, it is worth highlighting the construction of a granary to plant corn of endangered varieties.

Huerto Roma also has a unique recycling system in which each container that arrives is converted into a partition ; they are filled with plastic bags and their final destination is to use them to build houses.

At Huerto Roma Verde , joint and collective work benefits everyone. Change starts with one person, then it is transmitted and transformed into a better society. Would you like to organize an event in this wonderful space? We can help you with everything.
